From my recent purchase of Microbee material there was an original disk of THE PARAFFIN FILE and its manuals. The disk was a standard Microbee 5.25" DS40 disk that auto-boots with no copy protection. The disk imaged initially with many errors on a Floppyio. The disk platter was removed from its jacket, thoroughly cleaned with warm soapy water, dried and put back into a clean jacket and read via an 80 track drive. Substantially better but still with a few errors on Track 34 but the program now runs okay after fully testing it out. The manuals consisted of both a Teachers Notes and Worksheets. Both were A5 in size and both 10 pages long, however, the pages of the Worksheets were actually A4 in size but as foldout pages.
The copyright of THE PARAFFIN FILE is held by BP Educational Services (UK) and originally developed by Northgate House from an earlier publication The Paramark Problem published in conjunction with Bath University School of Education, England. This Microbee version was developed by the Schools Computing Branch of the Education Department of Western Australia in 1986 and released via Wesoft. Boots to a Menu -
Paraffin File is a strategy game based upon the U.K. market for
paraffin (a heating oil similar to kerosene). In the game there
are three competing companies — Europoil, Mexxo and Nosoco —
vying for a place in the declining paraffin market. Groups of
students become the decision makers for each of the companies.
The game is played for 10 ‘years’ with decisions being entered
and results being reported each ‘year’. Sensible decisions can lead
to increased profit and an increased share of the market, and the
marketing strategies of one company influence the performance of
both the other companies.
All of the information used in the development of the game is
historically accurate and thus the game depicts reality as much as
possible.
So in the MbeeTech Repository in the Microbee\Software\Education folder we placed
the_paraffin_file_ds40.dsk
the_paraffin_file_teachers_notes.pdf <--- both in Documentation\Manuals\Education folder
the_paraffin_file_worksheets.pdf
the_paraffin_file.jpg <--- in Documentation\Pictures\Disks\5.25in folder
NOTE: This the last of the major material from my recent Microbee purchase.
